I already had this PPA installed for other software updates, but for anyone who wants to update VLC to version 2.2.x in Linux Mint 17.x, you can install the PPA using the instructions below.

So, I read that this PPA "mc3man/trusty-media" below will upgrade VLC to version 2.2.1 (WeatherWax), so I removed the VLC Stable Daily PPA, and the Master Daily PPA, installed this PPA, and it did update VLC to v2.2.1, and then I added the "vlc-plugin-libde265" that "gary.zw" mentioned, and it plays the newer type x265 videos now. But, I had to re-install my Linux Mint system recently, and now the VLC Master Daily PPA will not upgrade VLC it looks like they have changed this to only update Linux systems based on Ubuntu 15.xx and 16.xx now, and Linux Mint 17.x is based on Ubuntu 14.xx (which will be good for Linux Mint 18, if needed).
Sometime last year, I installed the VLC Master Daily PPA, and it upgraded my VLC to version 3.x. I have the VLC Stable Daily PPA installed, but it would not upgrade VLC to beyond version 2.1.6 in my Linux Mint KDE 17.3. Thanks "gary.zw", that worked well for VLC.
